Hazardous Waste Specialist

Hazardous waste specialists work to make sure that toxic materials aren’t released into our environment. Federal regulations state that certain materials dangerous to human and environmental health must be tracked from the “cradle to the grave.”

Part of a hazardous waste specialist’s job is documenting how, when, and where the materials are generated, stored, transported, and used, but they may also spend time investigating and eventually prosecuting entities who have chosen to disregard hazardous waste laws.

Responsibilities Often Include:
• Surveillance of suspected violators
• Assisting in prosecution efforts
• Following up on complaints
• Enforcing regulations
• Issuing permits
• Educating the public about the dangers of hazardous waste
• Performing inspections
