Surface Water Specialist

Surface water specialists monitor streams, rivers, lakes, and wetlands in order to enforce regulations intended to keep these waterways clean and healthy. A specialist will sample the water and aquatic life to compare actual levels of chemicals, oxygen, nutrients, and even water temperature to those specified by policy. If levels do not comply with those designated by regulations, the surface water specialist would recommend remedial actions.

Responsibilities Often Include:
• Testing water and aquatic life
• Investigating causes of elevated pollutant levels
• Enforcing regulations
• Issuing permits
• Reviewing and implementing technical standards
• Educating the public about water quality
